Note from
President Weir

F” is for Family

I enjoyed watching my girls and the speaker's daughter do the pledge of allegiance at our meeting last Thursday.  It reminded me that “F” is for Family and that Rotary is all about family.  I loved having my parents, wife, and nephew at my first meeting, and I LOVE razzing my brother, Kevin, on a regular basis at Rotary.  Although I do owe him big time for always saving me a seat when I’ve come late to our meetings.

So it’s because “F” is for Family that I wish to give a big shout-out to our Foster Kidfest Committee this week! I sometimes take being part of a family for granted until I think what it must be like for kids without a permanent, loving family. That’s why our Foster Kidfest Committees' goal is to help foster kids find a “forever” family.

This past week the Foster Kidfest Committee had a wonderful outdoor stargazing event.  What a special evening with 17 foster kids and families learning about the moon, planets, and stars.

A big shout-out goes to committee chairs Julie Kelsey, Shanna Cejka, and the entire Foster Kidfest Committee for organizing the event.  And thank you to Joe Bruce & Mark Barnes for hauling their mega telescopes out so the kids could see and learn about the constellations that light up the night sky. And also a big thank you to the multiple Club #21 Rotarians who helped make this event a huge success!

I also feel like Rotary Club #21 is my family.  There’s an old saying that the people that are there for you on your darkest nights are the ones worth spending your brightest days with. I couldn’t agree more!  I've heard so many stories this past year of how our fellow Rotarians were there for each other during the darkest moments of the pandemic.  So thank you to those Rotarians that reached out and checked in with each other during the pandemic.

And if you still don’t see a fellow Rotarian at a meeting or active on Zoom, please do reach out to them and check in with them.  Because that is what family does for each other.  And “F” is for family, and Rotary Club #21 is indeed family!

2020 Fred K. Jones Award Recipient

Congratulations to the recipient of the 2020 Fred K. Jones Rotarian of the Year award,
Dave Troyke!

Dave has been a member of Club 21 since February 2004, is an 8-times Paul Harris Fellow and PHS member, a Club Builder times 9, has served on the Board of Directors twice, and has served on just about every committee we have.

This past stressful year he served on the Budget, Membership Development, Member Engagement, Program, Civic Affairs, Paul Harris, and co-chaired the International Service Committee.

He headed up the adoption of Stevens Elementary as our club’s grade school and then spearheaded the weekly food giveaway there during the pandemic. He recruited weekly volunteers and drove the Second Harvest truck for nearly a year in spite of suffering a pretty good bicycle injury.

He has gone on 2 International Service Missions. He traveled to Ecuador with our Interact Club and traveled to Kenya to work on a water project.

Dave epitomizes Service Above Self, congratulations to the 2020 Rotarian of the Year, Dave Troyke!
